Today’s Poem: Aspecta Medusa (for a Drawing), by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

March 4, 2016 | Filed Under Poem for Hela | Comments Off on Today’s Poem: Aspecta Medusa (for a Drawing), by Dante Gabriel Rossetti

Rossetti wrote this poem based on his drawing of Medusa:

Aspecta Medua - Rossetti

Aspecta Medusa (for a Drawing)

Andromeda, by Perseus sav’d and wed,

Hanker’d each day to see the Gorgon’s head:

Till o’er a fount he held it, bade her lean,

And mirror’d in the wave was safely seen

That death she liv’d by.

Let not thine eyes know

Any forbidden thing itself, although

It once should save as well as kill: but be

Its shadow upon life enough for thee.

Bindrune for Boundaries and Protection

If you are new to working with bindrunes, I suggest you read the introductory bindrune post here, then return to this post to read about this specific bindrune.

This week’s bindrune is for creating strong boundaries and protection. If you are heading into a difficult situation, or find yourself having to deal with undesirable people, or are just feeling generally vulnerable, this bindrune will help you create a solid energy foundation to keep you whole.

Bindrune for Boundaries and Protection: Ior, Teiwaz, Algiz

Bindrune for Boundaries and Protection: Ior, Teiwaz, Algiz

Ior (green): The rune of Jormundgand brings to you the magical protection that the Midgard Serpent provides to our realm. Your energies are safely protected inside your circle of energy, and others’ energies are kept out—quite firmly.

Teiwaz (purple): The rune of Tyr, the One-Handed God. Tyr brings in the power born of right conduct and honorable action, strong defense at all times.

Algiz (brown): The strength of the elk and the protective space created by its antlers are yours as well. A secondary association with this rune is sedge grass, which has razor-sharp edges and viciously harms all who try to invade. The two combined offer a reservoir of “touch me not” energy to create a clear field around you.

The bind rune on the left was done in colored pencil. The one on the right was done with fine point calligraphy markers. They are shown in two different media to give an idea of how the same bind rune looks different depending on how it is created.

You could also put a drop of rosemary on the bindrune to clear your mental space and keep your wits sharp, or a drop of your favorite oil  on it to reinforce the energy with your personal scent.

Be strong in your self, and in your belief in yourself.

Today’s Poem: from Notes on My Father, by Katerina Anghelaki-Rooke

from Notes on My Father

The old man moved into his night

a boat all lights on the evening harbor.

The island was in small spring,

The sun came out suddenly

struck the tiles

and disappeared again.

What could the old man know now of spring?

He spelled it out like a child the ABCs

comprehending the flower slowly.

Already something like soil

he had become only surface.

This mortal moved into

the crack in coal

the old sack

loaded with the four seasons

the four ages

with deep aging.

Brown spotted hands

and desperate blue veins.

The dawn of his birth

the village was in snow

the melon patch purple with cold.

His father came from the woods

with a dead boar

slung over his shoulder;

he dropped it in front of the fireplace.

Snow and game

small magic signs

around a wintry belly

Silence . . .

someone is swaying in the garden

someone is fondling the soil

the white soil of night.

I’m waiting for the moon to grow

for all to ease in me

to remember

to remember all miracles

the unmet

most of all.

I want to be in what’s being born

and in what’s ending,

I cast spells on my departing father

spells of love.

At the end of night

at the end of the gully

at the setting of the moon

it was me leaving in love

spellbound

exempt in death

all my forces unmouldered

for eternity.

In a green pasture

in a shady pasture

in a barbarous pasture of oleanders

from under comes all this vegetation

I praise

from under begins

the ascent of fate.

Today’s Poem: Be Softer With You, By Nayyirah Waheed

March 2, 2016 | Filed Under Poem for Hela | Comments Off on Today’s Poem: Be Softer With You, By Nayyirah Waheed

Today’s poem (selected at random) connects perfectly with today’s draw.

Be softer with you.

You are a breathing thing.

A memory to someone.

A home to a life.

Today’s Poem: She Walks in Beauty, by George Gordon, Lord Byron

March 1, 2016 | Filed Under Poem for Hela | Comments Off on Today’s Poem: She Walks in Beauty, by George Gordon, Lord Byron

Today’s poem is an evocative meditation on beauty. I hope it brings some beauty to your day as well.

She Walks in Beauty

She walks in beauty, like the night
   Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
   Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.
One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
   Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.
And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent.

~ George Gordon, Lord Byron

The Mediaeval Babes did a lovely recording of this, which you can listen to here.
