The Volva
What does she see? How much will she tell you?
What does she see? How much will she tell you?
Read This Poem from the Bottom Up
~ Ruth Porritt
(You can read this poem from the first line to the last line, or the last line to the first line)
This simple cathedral of praise
How you made, from the bottom up,
Is for you to remember
Of Andromeda. What remains
Until you meet the ancient light
With your sight you can keep ascending
Its final transformation into space.
And uphold
The horizon’s urge to sculpt the sky
Puts into relief
Your family’s mountain land
Upon the rising air. In the distance
A windward falcon is open high and steady
Far above the tallest tree
Just beyond your height.
You see a young pine lifting its green spire
By raising your eyes
Out onto the roof deck.
You pass through sliding glass doors
And up to where the stairway ends.
To the top of the penultimate stanza
Past the second story,
But now you’re going the other way,
Line by line, to the bottom of the page.
A force that usually pulls you down,
Of moving against the gravity of habit,
While trying not to notice the effort
And feel what it’s like to climb stairs

You are inspired to complete whatever has been lingering unfinished. You can see the goal line just ahead, and you are ready to make the final push to cross it and cross this item off your to-do list. Where is this energy coming from? All the internal work you’ve been doing has released old patterns, old ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving that no longer serve your best interests. With that energy unlocked from the ice, you are fired up and ready to finish!
If you are new to working with bindrunes, I suggest you read the introductory bindrune post here, then return to this post to read about this specific bindrune. Remember that working with bindrunes, as with working with any kind of magic, does not carry guaranteed results, and may produce results quite different from what you expect.
Living in uncertain times can discourage us from taking risks, even ones that we know are likely to pay off in desired ways. And, well, is there anyone who hasn’t felt the times they live in are uncertain? Here are two versions of a bindrune to provide protection and guidance during uncertain times, whether the uncertainty is the result of external factors, or our own choice to make change in ourselves and our lives.

Bindrune for Protection in Uncertain Times Var 1 – Perthro Eihwaz Algiz
Perthro (left tile, purple in bindrune): The rune of chance, of change, of unknown and unpredictable possibilities. This is the toss of the dice, the chance you are taking.
Eihwaz (center tile, green in bindrune): The yew tree provides defense in multiple ways—as a means of shelter, as a bow to shoot arrows, as a subtle poison. The rune is also associated with Yggdrasil, enabling you to travel between the worlds and move forward in the right direction.
Algiz (right tile, brown in bindrune): The protection of the horns of the elk, and the cutting blades of the elk-sedge grass. This rune creates a safe space for you to do your work, and to rest when you need to. Algiz also provides the strength of the elk to energize you to keep going.

Bindrune for Protection in Uncertain Times Var 2 – Perthro Eihwaz Teiwaz
This second variation closes with Teiwaz (right tile, brown in bindrune) in place of Algiz. Teiwaz brings in the principles of truth and ethical conduct, guiding you in right behavior and strengthening your personal courage and commitment to those principles. Since you are invoking Tyr, be sure you are acting in an honorable manner and for the highest good to earn His blessing.
The bindrunes on the left were done in colored pencil. The ones on the right were done with fine point calligraphy markers. They are shown in two different media to give an idea of how the same bindrune looks different depending on how it is created.
You could put a drop of sage oil for clarity of purpose, or lavender for calm and courage. You could also use your favorite oil on it to reinforce the energy with your personal scent. You can also use a magical oil, such as a hoodoo oil or other type of specially prepared oil.
Use this bindrune—and all bindrunes—entirely at your own risk.
He Tells of a Valley Full of Lovers
~ William Butler Yeats
I dreamed that I stood in a valley, and amid sighs,
For happy lovers passed two by two where I stood;
And I dreamed my lost love came stealthily out of the wood
With her cloud-pale eyelids falling on dream-dimmed eyes:
I cried in my dream, O women, bid the young men lay
Their heads on your knees, and drown their eyes with your fair,
Or remembering hers they will find no other face fair
Till all the valleys of the world have been withered away.
